âUmâ¦â
âOh, donât worry, kid. I may be a cadet, but Iâm still a soldier. We donât go around attacking civilians. And it looks like the matter is settled for now. Hey, Belt Princess! Iâll let you off this time, but you cause any more trouble, I wonât show any mercy!â
âOh, Sir Lloyd, Sir Lloyd, Sir Lloyd!â
âSheâs not listeningâ¦â
A moment later, Choline came running over, catching wind of the commotion.
âOy! Whatâs goinâ on?! Allan, Selen, they said you were fixinâ to throw down! â¦What the heck is that?!â She pointed at Selen, who was busy rubbing her cheek all over Lloydâs chest.
Allan snapped to attention and explained the situation.
ââand thatâs the long and short of it. The problemâs solved for now.â
âRiiiightâ¦well, at least it didnât turn into anything major. Huh. Lloyd? I feel like Iâve heard that name beforeâ¦where was itâ¦?â
While Choline was searching her memories, Merthophan & Co. finally arrived to the scene. The crowd parted before him.
âWhatâs all the fuss?â His dispassionate gravitas was enough to silence the crowd of onlookers, who were mostly students.
Choline was the first to answer. âOh! Merthophan! And Riho andâ¦Chrome?!â
She was clearly surprised by this last one.
âWhatâs going on, Choline?â
âUh, long story short, Allan and Selen were fighting, but this Lloyd kid stopped them.â
ââLloyd?!ââ
In response to this chorus, Selen finally pulled her face out of his chest and launched into a passionate explanation. âExactly! To protect me! To stand in my stead! To fight this brute of a man!â
ââ¦Says the woman running around town ripping peopleâs chest hair out,â Allan grumbled. But nobody was listening to him.
âWhat are you thinking?â Riho asked.
Merthophan grunted. âRiho Flavinâ¦you must know. With everything youâve experienced on the battlefieldâ¦you must be able to estimate his strength.â
Riho shot him a look, clearly stating she had no idea why he was bringing this up now.
âIf Lloyd were to fightâ¦,â Merthophan continued, âheâd have a chance to prove his power⦠Wouldnât you want to see that?â
Realization dawned on her. At a glance, Lloyd looked like he couldnât even hurt a flyâsheâd doubted her own instincts when sheâd met him for the first time.
âYeah, I could stand to see him in actionâ¦â
Riho was mostly in it for the money, but sheer curiosity took its place this time.
âIf he thoroughly defeats Allanâ¦that might help my grounds to get him enlisted,â Merthophan muttered. He took a few steps over to Allan. âIs that true? Are you really willing to fight this Lloyd kid?â
Allan snapped his heels together, saluting. He shook his head. âNo, sir. Weâve settled the problem in questionâ¦and I consider myself a soldier, sir. I wouldnât dream of laying a finger on an innocent civilian.â
âTake a hint.â
âHuh?â
While Allan was playing the part of a model soldier, Merthophan gave him a serious lookâ¦no, more like a pointed glare. Allan had no idea what heâd done to incur the colonelâs wrath, so he just stood there, mouth agape.
âYouâre a soldier! And youâre telling me you canât even beat up a mere civilian?!â he roared.
The crowd gasped in horror, and Choline quickly jumped in.
